FAQs & Guidelines

Who may be interred in our columbaria or mausolea or buried in our cemetery?

The Columbaria, mausolea, and cemetery are intended for the parishioners of Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral Parish, however, a portion of plots, niches, and crypts are reserved for individuals from outside our parish, the poor, and clergy.

How many spaces are set aside for individuals from outside the parish?

10% of the cemetery is reserved for non-Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral parishioners (17 crypts, 201 niches, and 43 graves).

How are spaces assigned?

Spaces are assigned on a first come, first served basis. You may request a specific space online or by calling the parish office.

How long will you hold my requested space?

We will hold the space for three (3) weeks after the paperwork is sent to you. After three weeks, if payment has not been received, the space will be released for others to reserve.

How many spaces are available in each type of resting place?

Niches can hold two urns for cremated remains. Crypts are above ground in the mausolea and can hold one full-body casket each. In-ground graves can hold two caskets.

May more than the number of people indicated above be buried or interred in one space?

No. Niches are limited to up to two (2) urns; crypts are limited to one (1) casket, and in-ground graves are limited to two (2) caskets.

May I purchase only one of the in-ground grave spaces, instead of both in the plot?

No. For the initial launch of the cemetery, the two spaces in the in-ground graves cannot be separated into more than one purchase.

How many spaces may I purchase?

You may purchase one individual space per each member of your immediate household, plus four additional spaces. For example, a household of two could purchase up to six total spaces (for example, three in-ground graves or three niches). A household of three could purchase up to seven total spaces (for example, two in-ground graves and three crypts or two niches, one in-ground grave, and one crypt). Exceptions may be allowable at the discretion of the Pastor.

How can I pay?

You can pay via check or via credit card. Please note that credit card transactions will incur an additional 3% processing fee.

Is discounted pricing on the resting spaces available?

Yes. A 10% discount is available for parishioners only who purchase prior to groundbreaking.

What is the cost to purchase?

See “Cemetery Pricing” under “Documents.”

Do you offer financing?

No less than 50% of the purchase price is required to reserve the space. The remaining 50% may be paid monthly over 12 months. If the purchaser falls behind by more than 2 months, the funds already paid will be refunded (less incurred expense and perpetual care amount) and the space will be released for sale again.

What is included in the purchase price?

The price includes the space (niche, crypt, or in-ground grave), the engraving on the crypt’s or the niche’s faceplate, administrative processing, and the perpetual care of the environs of the cemetery. Urns, caskets, vaults, and headstones must be purchased separately. Headstones must be purchased through an approved vendor. Opening and closing of the niche, crypt, or in-ground plot during interment is not included in the purchase price.

I purchased a niche to accommodate one person. If I later decide to add another person, can I do so?

Yes. You will be charged the difference between the price you paid for the one-person niche and the price of the two-person niche that is in effect at the time you purchase it.

What happens if I purchase a niche, crypt, or grave, then move away?

As long as no remains have been laid to rest, your original purchase price, less any incurred expenses and the perpetual care fee, will be refunded and the right of interment will revert back to the Parish.

What if I or a loved one who has purchased space in the cemetery pass away before construction is completed?

For a casket, temporary space will need to be rented by the family from a funeral home or cemetery until construction is complete. Upon completion, the family may move remains to their permanent resting place at the Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral Cemetery. Cremated remains will need to be stored by the family until the niche is ready.

My spouse is not Catholic, and I want to be buried with him or her. Are there any provisions whereby we can be placed in the same space?

Yes. Spouses may be interred together in one niche, buried in separate spaces in the same in-ground plot, or both be interred in separate crypts. All associated liturgies, however, will be in keeping with Roman Catholic rites. Exceptions require approval by the Pastor.

May I decorate the area around the niche, crypt, or grave with flowers or other objects?

No. The cemetery will be perpetually maintained in a manner designed to be beautiful, serene, holy and edifying. Temporary items left at the time of death will be removed by the grounds crew per their schedule.

May anything be added to cremated remains, such as cremated remains of other persons, pets, or other objects?

No. Mingling of remains is not an accepted or permitted practice, except in extraordinary circumstances.

Will the final constructed cemetery be an exact replica of the artistic renderings distributed to the Parish?

The final design and construction of the cemetery will be dependent on interest and pre-sale activity. Low interest and sales may necessitate a scaled down version of the draft plans shown. If there are any differences between the preliminary plans and the final plans, any purchasers affected by the change shall be notified. Payments will not be refundable, and purchaser should expect to carry the risk that final construction may not exactly reflect current design.

Is there a plan to develop additional space in the cemetery?

Yes. Marketing materials show Phase I of the cemetery project. If needed, there are additional plans for a Phase II expansion.

Notes on the Mausolea

Because each mausoleum is a separate, freestanding structure, for the initial launch of the cemetery, a certain number of crypts or niches must be purchased in advance in order for construction on them to begin. By the time of groundbreaking, if the needed number of purchases has not been made, those individuals who did purchase space in a mausoleum will be given the option to move to a different space in the cemetery and entitled to a refund of the difference between the price paid and the price of the new selected space.

Those who purchased space in a mausoleum and do not elect to select a new space at the time of groundbreaking may keep their reserved space with the understanding that construction on the mausoleum cannot begin until a threshold of sales has been reached. These purchasers may elect to move to a different space at any time, however, any transfers post-groundbreaking will result in a reduced refund (purchase price of mausoleum space less current increased post-groundbreaking pricing).

The Pastor of Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral may change a policy or make an exception at his discretion. Policies and procedures for the planned Phase II of the cemetery project may differ from those of the current Phase I.
